Atlantic Station (a US Green Building Council LEED Certified Project) is the largest Urban Brownfield redevelopment in the U.S. Located on the former Atlantic Steel Mill in Midtown Atlanta, this project is the pinnacle of Green Design concepts and is a national model for smart growth and new urbanism. The 138-acre project is a true Mixed-Use community that combines residential, office and retail in one location, while also being located on top of a massive parking deck structure. Bilson & Associates was hired as the lead Landscape Architecture firm to Design and provide Construction Documents for the overall project.

Atlantic Station Hardscape & Landscape Features

The community offers approximately 15 million square feet of retail, office, residential and hotel space as well as 11 acres of public parks. With outdoor dining and gathering space at the center of the project, as well as multiple parks around the outskirts, Atlantic Station offered its residents many areas to 'get away' from the city life. Pedestrian-friendly sidewalks were incorporated into all surface streets in the development. When combined with the parks, this gives residents an opportunity to relax in outdoor spaces designed to help visitors feel at peace while in the midst of an urban zone.

Atlantic Station Urban Streetscape

With widely varying conditions ranging from expansive boulevards to intimate street-front stores, this project gave interesting opportunities for creative design. By incorporating vintage style lighting, protective bollards, colorful landscaping and large canopy trees, we were able to bring a pedestrian-friendly feel to this large urban development. With mid-to-high-rise buildings located around the project, scale was very important, both in the hardscape and landscape designs.

With an IKEA store also located on property, hardscape plans were designed to offer residents wide paths to walk to and from the store. Landscaping was also coordinated so that the overall project became seamless as residents moved from space to space.

Atlantic Station Linear Parks

The Linear Park at Atlantic Station provides a Green connection from the existing neighborhoods to shopping, work and recreational opportunities in an urban setting. The park features a strong linear axis with wide sidewalks and benches, lined with large trees and planters. One section of the park also includes a small off-leash dog park which has become very popular with the residents. Approximately 2,800 trees were designed and installed on this project, creating a lush landscape that softens this urban region, while also cooling off the hardscapes during the warm summer days.
