As the largest corporation in the world, Walmart tends to lead the pack when it comes to environmental responsibility. This means they spend considerable time and effort to make their projects as Green as possible, including reducing the overall footprint of a site. Bilson & Associates was selected to design their most recent store which was built over a parking deck, in Chamblee, Georgia. Located adjacent to several major thoroughfares and railroad tracks, this in-town in-fill project is a large focal point for residents and visitors, as well as those commuting in and out of the nearby towns.

Joining the team early in the concept phase, we were able to provide valuable input with regards to building orientation, water reclamation, irrigation design, structural load requirements for the planters, etc. Each of these items must be considered as a whole during the design phase, as they each have a direct impact on one another and can make or break a Green Roof project. This also simplifies the Construction Document phase, as all consultants are on the same page and can accommodate everything component required for a Green Roof project.

Outdoor Lighting and Landcape

For the Chamblee Walmart project, a portion of the building and parking were built on-structure, with the remaining portion of the overall shopping center and outparcels being built on grade. This presented a unique opportunity to blend the structure of the deck with the landscape and hardscape of the on-grade portion, making it as seamless as possible. With the exception of the larger expansion joints required for a parking structure, you would be hard pressed to know this project was on top of a concrete deck. We incorporated raised concrete planters with insulation, drainage and irrigation to provide spaces for greenery that would soften the concrete deck. We also provided larger tree planters to help shade the parking spaces on the deck, while also meeting the local jurisdiction's requirements for tree density units.
